We take measurements of many different parts of the eye when fitting you for contact lenses because a good fit is important. A contact lens that doesn’t fit your eye’s shape can feel uncomfortable and even feel like it might fall out.

Certain eye conditions are considered to make contact lens clarity and comfort more difficult. These include astigmatism and keratoconus, as they affect the curvature of the cornea, as well as the discomfort that comes with dry eye.

Standard Contact Lens Types

Contact lenses can vary in material, design, and even the length of time that you can wear them. While there are a few standard contact lens types, they all have a similar spherical shape and can be worn on patients with or without corneal irregularities.

Spherical

Spherical contact lenses are the most commonly used contact lenses. They come in a wide variety of options for use, from daily disposables to reusable for up to 1 month.

If you switch between contact lenses and glasses or don’t need your contact lenses all of the time, daily disposables may be a good choice for you.

Toric

Multifocal contact lenses are ideal for those who need prescription lenses to see objects both far and near. The contact lens can correct the patient’s vision, whether they are reading up close or looking at something far away, all while seamlessly transitioning between the two.

Multifocal contact lenses are ideal for those with presbyopia, a condition that can occur with age where objects up close become blurry. With age, we often need extra help with our vision at all distances.

Specialty Contact Lens Types

No eye shape is the same, and some of our patients have a unique eye shape or eye condition. That doesn’t stop us from finding a contact lens that will work with their vision. That’s why we carry many specialty contact lenses that are specifically designed to fit different eye shapes and direct light in numerous ways.

The specialty lenses that we carry include aspheric, scleral, toric, and ortho-k contact lenses. Talk to our team about your vision and if you have hard-to-fit eyes that may require specialty contact lenses.

Gas-Permeable (GP)

While a traditional contact lens has an even spherical shape throughout, aspheric lenses vary in shape, with different curvatures throughout the lens.

This is to account for corneal abrasions or corneal conditions where the cornea is an uneven shape, like in astigmatism or keratoconus.

Hybrid

Hybrid contact lenses combine both a softer and harder material in one lens. The middle of the contact lens is a more rigid material, and the outer ring is a softer material. With two materials in one, you get both crisp vision and comfort at the same time.

Scleral

Scleral lenses are RGP lenses that are slightly larger, and rest of the sclera, or the whites of the eye. This allows them to fit comfortably on those with abnormally shaped corneas, like with corneal conditions such as astigmatism or keratoconus.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) RGP contact lenses primarily work to change the curvature of the eye’s cornea to improve focus on objects and reduce blurriness.

These lenses are commonly worn at night to make these corrections and won’t need to be worn for an extended period.
